Revitalized Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in 882 Days
19 of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hard courts
A revitalized Medvedev secured his initial title for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.
The Russian, a former world number one, has had a difficult period, winning just a single victory at the big events and undergoing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in especial - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately splitting with long-time trainer his previous coach.
Currently training with his coach and Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently advanced in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought competitive win over opponent Moutet.
It is his initial trophy following the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.
Success also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one victories at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters together, so to secure a title is really nice," stated tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his past six title deciders, including in the German tournament previously this season.
Medvedev's defensive play style and recurring reactions on the tennis court had prompted commentators to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was finished.
But the 29-year-old has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and perform positively, reinforced by an improved serving game.
He fought back from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky opponent, securing 4 of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial professional title, seized the initiative to create a third set.
Moutet defended four initial break points in a tight deciding set before the champion broke to 15 to secure the win.
Appropriately, Medvedev earned victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to control a volley after over two and a half hours.
