Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
